When I write a poem, I have it read on the evening news. Sometimes the news preempts my poem. Like that time the anchorman's microphone threw itself from a second-story window. Deprived of his resonant voice, he reported the tragedy in mime, and my poem had to wait until after midnight, when it was read by a spokesman for a used-car dealership.

Each new impression of stems and roots, small discontinuous bodies and parts of ancient fans, abandoned channels, flats, meadows and human relics first deposited by water and subsequently reworked by wind, destroys in part the tumultuous efforts of its predecessor, a piece of paper.
